from Benjamin K on the road
Kristen and I arrived in Utah (the Beehive State, who knew?) after a sweltering drive through Western Colorado. We were warmly greeted in Salt Lake City by our long lost friend and Salt Lake native Kate Ithurralde. She also worked at MASS MoCA with Kristen and I in the year of 2005.
We spent a busy-bee five days in Utah. Here’s a brief run-down for those keeping score:
• Gladys Knight in concert at Deer Valley in Park City, UT! Hell yeah- it was awesome! fav: Midnight Train to Georgia and dancing with wine & cheese yuppies.
• Benjamin K birthday celebration at Raging Waters water-slide park. Holy cow- haven’t done this since Diamond Jim’s in Ft. Wayne (anyone on the blog remember Diamond Jim’s? Holler). fav: lazy river, wacky SLC locals, birthday cake.
• Temple Square downtown Salt Lake City. I know all religions can be a little bonkers but Mormonism takes the cake. The Temple a Mo-Tab buildings are pretty but we were more entertained by Space Jesus and his post-crucifix native american tour.
• Wasatch Mountains hike to Lake Mary. Outdoorsy fun with gorgeous flora/fauna and a faux-meat picnic (Kate is also hip in her vegetarianism)
• a fabulous haircut from Kate’s father Bob. See below some pics for the Foothill Barbers event. Thanks Kate’s Dad!
• Salt Lake Bees home game – minor league baseball at its best! tickets for five bones to see this Angels feeder team beat the Colorado Springs Sky Sox in extra innings! And, c’mon- what is Brigham Young’s name is a Sky Sock? Go Bees! Ya gotta Bee-lieve.
THANKS Kate for being the hippest host a pair of land-locked lovers could ask for!
Listening: Ice of Boston by the Dismemberment Plan
Eating: Spaghetti Factory with Papa Ithurralde
Watching: Phelps swim like a fish
Wanting: a Gladys Knight encore
Miles: lost count
